In the story of Esther, we see God caring for his people, even though his name is never mentioned. A king’s sleepless night and a queen’s place in the palace serve his purpose. When evil seems strong, we remember that God remains in control. His plan to save his people carries on.
Through Esther and Mordecai, we learn the value of courage and wisdom. Esther risks her life to plead for her people, and Mordecai urges her to see why she may be queen at this very moment. We reflect on our own place and the good we have the chance to do, even when it costs us something.
Haman’s pride shows us how bitter a selfish heart becomes. His wealth and honor bring him no joy while one man refuses to bow. In the end, he hangs on the gallows he prepares for Mordecai. Mordecai receives the king’s ring and uses his power for his people’s good. We see sorrow turn to joy as the Jews find safety and rest.
As we consider these events, we can also see a picture of our own lives. Like the king, we have choices to make and people we influence. Haman can remind us of our sinful nature, while Esther and Mordecai can picture the Spirit’s good work within us. We face the question: who holds the ring in our hearts?
Through Jesus, we are freed from slavery to sin and called to a new life. We no longer need to let pride and selfishness rule us. As we welcome the Holy Spirit’s work, our hearts grow in love and care for others. The people within our reach share in the good that God works in us.
