We are part of the household of Christ, and that is a wonderful place to belong. Jesus calls us His brothers and sisters, and we have a place in His family. But Hebrews also gives us a serious warning. We must hold firmly to our hope and faith in Jesus. We cannot simply begin the journey. We must hang on to the end.
Sometimes our grip weakens slowly. We hear God’s voice, but we tell ourselves we will respond tomorrow. The children of Israel did this even after seeing God’s mighty works. They saw Him rescue them, feed them, and lead them, yet they still asked, “Is the Lord among us?” Their hearts grew hard because they stopped trusting the God who had already shown Himself faithful.
For us, the important word is “today.” Today we listen when God speaks. Today we deal with the things that need to change. Small choices can slowly harden our hearts, just as a weak gate latch can eventually let the cows out. We should not assume there will always be another day to fix what we already know needs attention.
At the same time, we do not hang on alone. Scripture tells us to encourage one another daily. We are walking this road together, and part of our calling is to strengthen the grip of the people beside us. When someone grows tired, doubtful, or discouraged, we call them close and remind them that God is still faithful.
So we keep our eyes on Jesus and remember what God has already done. We listen to His voice while our hearts are still tender. We encourage one another, trust Him when life becomes difficult, and keep holding firmly to the hope He has given us. Today is the day to hang on.
