You ask, “What do you mean, Christmas has a “dark side”? You say, “Just when we are gearing up for a holly, jolly Christmas, and here comes Merle bringing a downer into the picture?”
Actually, what we want to meditate on this morning is this: while the Christmas story is an exceedingly lovely one, there was actually quite a lot of pain and sacrifice involved. And as we recognize that, our appreciation for the people involved in the story should only increase.
We will look at Mary, most blessed of women, and see the pain that went along with her calling. Also Joseph, faithful protector and father figure for Son of God. And most of all we’ll look at Jesus, who sacrificed more than we can imagine to make the incarnation a reality.
